I started at HHHR in April of 2016 after my dad and I lost our house due to financial issues. I had grown up around horses and decided I wanted to do something meaningful with them to get my Bright Future volunteer hours for high school. Finding them was a miracle that changed my life in so many wonderful ways. I expected a quality horse rescue but instead I found my family. They are my home now and Teresa Meixner (the proprietor) is one of the best people I've ever met. She's my awesome momma now and has helped so many other troubled youths and adults. Whether it's bullying, depression, cutting, suicides, family loss, etc., she and the sanctuary horses help us through it all.
The horses that come in are so often in terrible condition and some of them lose the battle for their life, but in just days HHHR has given them so much, including their hearts and the horses are always remembered and fought for. The time, dedication, and heartache that they invest and incur is staggering. Truly, they are all about the well-being of the animals. They do whatever it takes and all the donations go directly to the horses, when donations are down Teresa unhesitatingly has put her own money towards the horses as well just to ensure the best level of care.
Since starting there as a volunteer, I've moved up from being a volunteer to a senior volunteer to a team leader and often act as their representative in many events. This has done a lot for myself worth and enabled me to take on other leadership positions in addition to teaching me better ways to reach out and interact with our community.
Howey Horse Haven Rescue are lifesavers, equine and human. Please if you have a chance, check them out! They are a one of the last equine rescues in Lake County and if you're looking for a place to help, I can not endorse them enough! Please if you are able to, they rely entirely on the public's generosity and need donations, sponsors, adopters, volunteers, and prayers to keep up their amazing work.

I have had first hand experience as volunteer at Howey Horse Haven Rescue to see the great work they do. Some are very sad stories but the love and care for these beautiful horses get when the arrive and the wonderful transform is unbelievable. Some great stories for the ones that end up finding their forever home. Some will end up living the rest of there lives there that are old or have problems that need ongoing care and medical. They rely solely on donations and help from volunteers.
