ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION: The mission of the Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals (MSSPA) is to protect the health and welfare of neglected and abused equines. At its heart, the organization remains steadfast in its 152-year commitment to the welfare of equines, as well as to educating and engaging the public to advocate on behalf of equines. At any given time, the Society is home to between 35 and 40 horses. The MSSPA also operates two programs designed to divert horses away from the shelter system and be safely maintained in private homes: Maine Horse Matchmaker, a free equine rehoming platform, and The Feed & Care Bank, a program developed to keep horses in their homes by providing temporary financial assistance to horse owners experiencing unexpected financial hardship. Feed and Care Bank funds support horse owners by purchasing their feed or paying for veterinary or farrier services.
