The nonprofit Akhal-Teke Foundation presents a variety of programs to support these special horses, and the people who love them.
Akhal-Teke Horse Rescue
There's something about Akhal-Tekes. Horse royalty since 4000 years ago on the Central Asian Steppes, their beauty and spirit inspire people's dreams. But such amazing horses are not always the easiest. And people whose dreams run toward profits are soon disappointed. Nor is today's world forgiving for horses in general.
Being rare and amazing clearly does not protect purebred Akhal-Teke horses from falling on to hard times. There are too many sad stories for a breed with only a few hundred horses in North America.
On a case-by-case basis, in alignment with horse rescue national best practices, the Akhal-Teke Foundation does what we can to rescue purebred Akhal-Teke horses in bad or precarious situations, and to help find their forever home.
Genetic Preservation
Purebred Broodmares. Stallions at Stud. Akhal-Teke Frozen Semen Archive.
As the ancient rootstock breed of modern athletic horses, the Akhal-Teke is truly a vital component of the world's biodiversity heritage. And with only around ten foals born annually in the U.S. recently, the Foundation's breeding program is an essential component of Akhal-Teke breed preservation.
National Akhal-Teke Center
Dedicated to conservation breeding and Akhal-Teke breed education, the non-profit national Akhal-Teke Center in Lexington, Virgina is a cornerstone of the overall Akhal-Teke Foundation strategy for preservation and recovery of the foundation breed of today's athletic horses. Visitors welcome!
