Journey with Equus is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit sanctuary and equine wellness center based in Elbert County, Colorado. We are dedicated to providing a safe, lifelong haven for at-risk and non-ridable horses while offering transformative programs that help people heal, grow, and reconnect—with themselves and with the wisdom of the horse.
At the heart of our mission is a powerful belief: horses have immense value beyond riding. Through our equine-partnered wellness programs, we guide individuals through trauma recovery, personal development, and emotional breakthroughs—all with horses serving as intuitive, compassionate partners in the process. These sessions are deeply healing, helping people find clarity, confidence, and connection in a way that traditional methods often cannot.
We also offer equine education programs for individuals, families, and groups who want to deepen their understanding of horses through hands-on learning. From grooming and groundwork to understanding herd behavior and emotional regulation, our educational offerings empower people to build respectful, non-force-based relationships with horses.
Our larger goal is to shift the way America sees horses. By helping the public recognize the emotional and relational gifts horses bring—even when they can no longer be ridden—we hope to reduce unnecessary rehoming, abandonment, and euthanasia. We believe many horses could remain in loving homes if only their owners were supported in seeing their value differently.
To that end, we also provide matchmaking services for horse owners who are seeking to responsibly rehome their equine companions. Through careful screening and thoughtful placements, we help ensure horses land in safe, aligned homes where they can thrive.
